What Upholstery Steam Cleaning Involves
Fabric holds what surface vacuuming leaves behind. Dust, skin cells, body oils, spills and odour settle into the weave and the foam beneath it, which is why a sofa can look acceptable and still smell stale.
Hot-water extraction injects a heated cleaning solution into the fabric and draws it back out under vacuum, lifting soil from within the fibre rather than skimming the surface. The method, solution and moisture level are matched to the material — leather, velvet, linen, microfibre and synthetic blends all behave differently.
Included as Standard
Every upholstery booking includes the following:
- Fabric identification and suitability assessment
- Colour-fastness test on a discreet area
- Dry soil removal before wet cleaning
- Stain pre-treatment where appropriate
- Hot-water extraction of seats, backs and arms
- Cushion covers and reachable crevices
- Odour-neutralising treatment where required
- Moisture extraction to shorten drying time
When Upholstery Cleaning Is Worth Booking
Fabric benefits from periodic extraction rather than waiting for visible marks to appear.

Sofas in daily use collect body oils and dust that vacuuming cannot reach.
Spills & Marks
Food, drink and pet accidents that have soaked into the weave.
Odour
Stale or lingering smells held in the fabric and foam beneath.
Before Guests or Handover
A refresh ahead of visitors, listing photographs or property handover.
How Upholstery Steam Cleaning Is Carried Out
Assessment comes first. No solution touches your furniture until the fabric has been identified and tested.
Fabric Assessment
We identify the material and check any manufacturer cleaning code, along with construction, filling and existing condition.
Colour-Fastness Check
A small discreet area is tested for dye stability and shrinkage before any wider cleaning begins. If the fabric is unsuitable for wet extraction we will tell you and stop.
Extraction Clean
Dry soil is removed first, stains are pre-treated where appropriate, then heated solution is injected and drawn back out under vacuum.
Moisture Removal
Additional extraction passes reduce residual moisture, followed by a walkthrough of the finished work with you.

How to Prepare
A few minutes of preparation lets the team work straight through.
- Remove cushions, throws, blankets and loose covers
- Clear items from beneath and around the furniture
- Vacuum loose pet hair if there is a heavy build-up
- Point out stains, spills and problem areas to the technician
- Tell us about any previous treatments or DIY cleaning attempts
- Allow access to a power socket and water point
Drying Times
Upholstery is left damp, not wet. Typical drying is 4 to 8 hours for most fabrics with reasonable airflow. Dense foam, thick weaves and heavily soiled pieces can take longer.
Drying time depends on fabric type, filling density, humidity, ventilation and air-conditioning. These are indicative ranges based on typical conditions, not a guaranteed duration.
- Keep air conditioning or fans running after the clean
- Avoid replacing cushions or covers until fully dry
- Avoid sitting on treated areas while damp
Important Limitations and Exclusions
Best possible results are subject to the surface, material, stain type, age and pre-existing condition.
- Complete removal of every stain cannot be promised. Dye transfer, ink, bleach, rust, paint, old set-in marks and pet urine may be permanent.
- Odour reduction depends on the source. Odour absorbed into foam or the frame may persist after cleaning.
- Pre-existing damage — fading, pilling, thinning, splitting seams, brittle leather, previous water marks — may become more visible once soil is removed.
- Some fabrics are unsuitable for wet extraction. If colour-fastness testing fails we will stop and discuss alternatives with you.
- Drying times are indicative and depend on fabric, filling, humidity and ventilation.
- We do not carry out reupholstery, structural repair, re-dyeing or foam replacement.
- Final pricing is confirmed after assessment of seat count, fabric, condition and agreed scope.
